Disruption of natural grooming chains after striatopallidal lesions

چکیده
Actions, like words, must be ordered into coordinated sequences. Action "syntax rules" exist for natural behavior such as gooming in rats. One rule produces a highly stereotyped chain of grooming actions. We report that the loss of intrinsic neurons from the corpusstriatum, after injections of neurotoxic kainic acid, disrupts execution of this syntactic chain while preserving component actions. Striatopallidal circuitry may contribute to the effectiveserial organization even of natural action into certain centrally generated sequential patterns.

Implementation of action sequences by a neostriatal site: a lesion mapping study of grooming syntax.
The neostriatum and its connections control the sequential organization of action ("action syntax") as well as simpler aspects of movement. This study focused on sequential organization of rodent grooming. Grooming syntax provides an opportunity to study how neural systems coordinate natural patterns of serial order. The most stereotyped of these grooming patterns, a "syntactic chain," has a pa...

In this study we present evidence that neurones in the basal ganglia code the serial order of syntactic (rule-driven) sequences of natural motor behaviour (rodent grooming). Neuronal activity was recorded from the striatum in freely behaving rats while they spontaneously groomed themselves. Offline, we analysed sequential patterns of movement in a frame-by-frame scan of video taped behaviour an...

OBJECTIVE To establish the pathophysiological mechanisms of striatopallidal and thalamic dystonia. METHODS Five patients from among 26 who presented (between March 1987 and July 1996) with focal dystonia, segmental dystonia, or hemidystonia caused by a single localised vascular lesion, were selected. Patients with lesions with indefinite boundaries, and diffuse, or multiple, or large brain le...

This study examined the relationship between sensorimotor and motivational functions of the corpus striatum. In rats, excitotoxic lesions of the corpus striatum (neostriatum and globus pallidus) caused by kainic or quisqualic acid can produce both aversive aphagia and a "choreic" sensorimotor syndrome: an exaggerated treading of the forepaws that is triggered by oral sensory stimulation. Experi...

The role of dopamine in the production of behaviour is multifarious in that it can influence different aspects of movement (e.g. movement initiation, sensorimotor integration, and movement sequencing). A characteristic of the dopamine system which seems to be critical for the expression of this diverse influence is its varied receptor population. Previous studies have shown that specific recept...
